The NHS Contraception Service is a partnership between the NHS and community pharmacies, aimed at helping you access your regular oral contraception supplies.

Whether you’re starting oral contraception for the first time, need your supply or looking to continue after a break, we can assist you.

Finding the best oral contraceptive pill for your needs starts with a conversation with our clinical team. Our friendly and professional pharmacists are here to offer personalized advice and support. They will ask you some simple questions to determine the most suitable contraceptive option for you and address any concerns you may have. Your privacy and comfort are our top priorities, and all consultations are conducted in a private consultation room, ensuring that everything discussed remains confidential. We pride ourselves on offering a supportive, non-judgemental environment for all our patients seeking Oral Contraceptive Pills.

What Contraceptives are Available Through the NHS Contraception Service?

The NHS Contraception Service at Pottery Road Pharmacy provides access to two types of oral contraceptive pills:

  1. Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC): The COC, often referred to as ‘the pill’, contains both oestrogen and progestogen. It prevents pregnancy by stopping the ovaries from releasing eggs. When taken correctly, the COC is over 99% effective. In addition to contraception, it can help with managing PMS, endometriosis, acne, and heavy or painful periods. The COC is available in two main types:
  • Everyday Pill: This version includes dummy pills without hormones.
  • 21 Day Pill: You take the pill for 21 days and then take a 7 day break.

Progestogen Only Pill (POP): The POP, also known as ‘the mini pill’, contains progestogen, a hormone that works similarly to progesterone. Like the COC, the POP prevents ovulation and is over 99% effective when taken correctly. The mini pill is taken daily at the same time, and each pack contains 28 pills, with no break between packs. Both of these options are available through the NHS Contraception Service.

FAQ

How do I know if I should choose the combined pill or the mini pill?

We’ll help you decide based on your health, lifestyle, and any risk factors like high blood pressure, smoking, or a history of blood clots. The combined pill can be helpful for things like heavy or painful periods, while the mini (progestogen‑only) pill is often a better option if you can’t take oestrogen for medical reasons. We’ll talk through your options and what suits you best.

Is the NHS Contraception Service at the pharmacy free?

Yes. This is an NHS‑funded service, so you can get your consultation and your contraceptive supplies at no cost just like at a GP surgery. There’s no charge for the appointment or for most types of pills, as long as you’re eligible for NHS contraception.

Can I get my pills even if I haven’t seen a doctor about them recently?

Yes, you can. Our trained pharmacists can check your blood pressure, BMI, and general health there and then, and in most cases safely continue or start your contraceptive. It’s a quick way to get your pack without having to wait weeks for a GP appointment.

Will the pill protect me against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?

No. The pill only prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation. It does not protect you from STIs. To reduce your risk of infections like chlamydia or gonorrhoea, you still need to use condoms or another barrier method every time you have sex.

Are the consultations private?

Yes, completely. We always see you in a private consultation room where no one can hear you. You can ask questions about side effects, your periods, or anything else without worrying about being overheard. We keep everything confidential and non‑judgmental.

Can I just walk in, or do I have to book?

You can do either. If you’re passing by and need a quick chat or a refill, you’re welcome to walk in during opening hours. If you’d rather know your exact time and avoid waiting, you can book a slot online and we’ll see you when it suits you.
